There is a lot of talk about distanced education technology being bandied about these days, but there are only a relative few college instructors that understand how online degree programs are permanently altering the academic landscape for post-secondary academic institutions and the faculty that teaches for them right now. The proliferation of online bachelor degree programs and online master’s degree programs is happening for a reason. The primary reason is that new and returning college students, many being non-traditional students with personal schedules crammed to the gunwales with family and employment obligations that are not negotiable, are very enthusiastic about being able to earn online elementary teaching degrees, online healthcare degrees or an online accounting degree from their personal computers at home at two o’clock in the morning.
What most college instructors teaching on an adjunct basis are quite familiar with is the diminishing opportunity to earn a decent living from that college teaching, and how each day brings even more dire news about further budget cuts that literally seem to have discernible end. This financial drubbing does not have to be taken lying down, however, by anyone who has an earned graduate degree. No, college teachers and other intellectuals have a rendezvous with online adjunct employment opportunities whether they realize it or not, and that collision is coming at them faster every passing day.
With the right application of time management principals, it possible for an alert and aggressive online college teacher to manage six to ten online college courses for several online college degree programs from an inexpensive laptop. True, this amount of online teaching will require a laser-like focus on the various administrative tasks required by the college and universities in addition to the actual interaction with the students, but the rewards can be so satisfying the traditional college adjunct may wonder where this online teaching for online degree programs has been all this time.
The sheer cost of maintaining a traditional college campus, which in reality is a large physical plant populated by energy-inefficient building surrounded by asphalt parking lots requiring resurfacing every two years, is quickly becoming too expensive when compared to the lost cost of distributing the same academic materials over the Internet. It is this economic aspect of distance education technology that makes the online adjunct instructor so valuable to the schools. Online adjunct instructors are more academic entrepreneur than academic employee. Online college teachers sell their educational and technical skill sets to thousands of academic markets. This ability to accept or decline online college classes at will puts the intellectual in charge of his or her economic condition.
If an online adjunct wants more money it is a simple matter of applying to extra accredited online degree programs, and if they academic entrepreneur wants more free time it is just as simple to decline additional online courses. Ultimately, the academy will move onto the Internet in ways that really can’t be imagined right now. It is for this reason that college teachers that what to teach online, or those who want to become online adjunct instructors by enrolling and completing a course of study in an online master’s degree program, should investigate the potential of online adjunct faculty positions.
