Some of the disadvantages of an online college though, are the rampant scams that are prevailing over the internet. So make sure to investigate the credentials of a given school before formally enrolling. Accreditation and authenticity are both very important. Another drawback of an online school is the lack of personal interaction with the teachers and fellow students as most communication will be done through email and chatting only. In the same way, no instantaneous feedback may be obtained when you want it as compared to a classroom set up where you can ask a question and get a direct answer on the spot. Students online must also have the restraint and discipline to carry out their student tasks. In my program I read a ton of history about libraries, their budgets, the philosophies of public access and privacy, et cetera. Little of it felt more expansive than reading ten different wikipedia links about the history of libraries and free speech.

I don’t want to sound like I regret getting an information science degree. It got me the job I have now, but that is because it functions more like an expensive membership card. In my opinion, the Master’s Degree for library science in general studies would be better represented as a vocational degree.

If you are looking at librarian jobs, here is what I would suggest: if you know the library system you would like to work in, talk to some of the librarians. Find out if they have librarian degrees. Ask if the system ever hires librarians without the degree.

Ask them what their school experience was like, and whether they have any regrets. You will learn a lot more by talking to people who have been there than from the library recruiters whose job is to get you to enroll.

I love my job, but I learned 99% of my job on the desk. It wasn’t because I studied.

When considering a college, it is important to make sure they have the proper accreditations. Check to make sure they are accredited by the Association to Advanced Collegiate Schools of Business. If you find that the college does not have this accreditation, you will want to check to make sure it is recognized by the board of accountancy in your state.

Another thing to look at is the college’s pass rate for students who have taken the CPA exam. This can be a good measurement to help you judge the effectiveness of the school’s accounting program. Not only will this be a good indication that you may pass the exam as a result of taking the same program, but schools that have an excellent accounting program are often the first choice for CPA firms looking to recruit. If you find that the college has a high CPA exam pass rate, plus big name accounting firms regularly show up for school recruiting events, then you have probably found a good school. The success of the college’s career placement service for accounting students is also a good clue as to the caliber of the accounting program. If the college you choose has an excellent program and a good career placement track record, chances are you will stand a good chance of receiving a job offer when you graduate with your degree.

Accounting Distance Learning

If you’re juggling a home, family, current job and looking for career advancement, you’ll probably want to consider your options to study at home. Many community colleges, four year colleges, and private colleges offer classes through distance learning.

Accounting Schools

Start looking in your home state, so you can pay the least amount of tuition possible. Make an appointment for a counseling session and pre-admission testing at your local junior college. Plan to take your general education classes through distance learning, and set a goal of a class a semester, including summer. This may seem like it will take forever, but by applying steady effort you will achieve your goal, so don’t despair.

Associate Degree in Accounting

Better late than never, many students that are re-entering the workforce, or entering the workforce for the first time at an advanced age are turning to an Associate Degree in Accounting.  This helps line up an entry level job with the military (as a civilian consultant), with local county government, state government, local small businesses, or as a confidence booster when starting a small business.

Bachelor Degree in Accounting

Many students, once completing their AA in Accounting will transfer their units and pursue a bachelor degree in accounting.  This prepares them for advancement from their current entry level positions, and into a technical or supervisory role.  The average wages for a student that has earned their bachelor degree in accounting vs an associate of arts (AA) degree in accounting is significant.  If you’ve already been going to school for many years and have a variety of units from several colleges, you can consider a degree completion program to consolidate your units, and work toward graduation.

In the past, a college instructor teaching on a adjunct basis for a traditional college or university had to spend what little income they earned on physical transportation just to reach the college campuses they could teach for during the year. There are several ways one may become a Gunsmith. First off, you’re going to need a clean record. You may be performing duties that require a license from the U.S. Government (such as a FFL license) and they do not just give these out without running a background check.

You have several choices when deciding to become a Gunsmith. The first one is to find an already established gunsmith and convince him or her to take you under their wing as an apprentice. An apprenticeship could last many years, but at least you’d have steady work while you were taught.

I’ve known several people who took this approach and were more than happy to continue working for the people who trained them. Some of these people ended up taking over the shops of their mentors.

Another way is to attend a community college that offers a Gunsmith course. There are about a half dozen or so that are well known. Some of these are Murray State College in Oklahoma, Trinidad College in Colorado, Montgomery Community College in North Carolina and Lassen Community College in California. There are others, but in my opinion, these are the best known Community colleges offering gunsmith courses.

Another way is to take an online course. I don’t really prefer this route for many people simply because of the wide variations in guns and the methods and techniques to fix them. It’s hard to cover everything you’ll need to know in an online or at-home course. I’ve heard about some who went through these courses, opened a shop and immediately ran into trouble when they came upon a job that they did not know how to fix. Unless you’re well versed in machining and mechanical systems, I’d probably pass this type of training up.

Finally there are private schools that will teach you how to become a gunsmith. Probably the most well known and respected of any school is the Colorado School of Trades.  This school has a wonderful course that will teach you all aspects of gunsmithing including machining and metal work. If you’re serious about becoming a gunsmith, this is the course I’d take if I were you.

• When you register for a class online, check to make sure that your computer meets the requirements for the system you will be using.
• When you enroll for your community online class, be sure to make that commitment to complete it!  There is generally a waiting list for classes, so don’t use up a slot in the class if you can’t complete it.  You’ll be preventing others from taking the class, and you may end up flunking the class.
• Organize yourself to work at a steady pace throughout the term.  Start out strong, and keep up your effort.  Make sure to involve yourself in any “participation” requirements, these are an important part of your grade.
• Communicate with your instructor if you get stuck on any issues – your teacher is there to help you out, make use of your opportunity for help.
• If you do need to drop the class, don’t forget to take care of withdrawing from the class.  If you don’t withdraw from the class you will most likely get an “F”, which will harm your GPA.
• Follow up online to make sure that your assignments are received and graded.  If you have any questions about your community online class let your teacher know as soon as possible.

What most college instructors teaching on an adjunct basis are quite familiar with is the diminishing opportunity to earn a decent living from that college teaching, and how each day brings even more dire news about further budget cuts that literally seem to have discernible end.
